The 2008 elections mark the first time either an African American or a woman will be their party's nominee for president. But is that really the news? Have domestic and international issues taken a backseat to gender and race? Do race and gender affect the way the media covers presidential candidates?

AAJA Hawai‘i hosted a Political Panel, discussing such issues and ways the media can cover important election issues. The hourlong discussion was broadcasted live statewide on PBS Hawaii's Island Insights show.

Panelists were political reporters Richard Borreca and Laurie Au of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, KITV's Denby Fawcett and Treena Shapiro of The Honolulu Advertiser. Dan Boylan served as moderator and host. Hawai‘i Republican Party chairman Willes Lee, Hawai‘i Democratic Party chairman Brian Schatz and KHON's Gina Mangieri provided additional video commentary.

PBS Hawaii co-produced the show with AAJA members Au, Kim Fassler and Stanley Lee.

A big MAHALO to everyone who came out for AAJA's College Night!

The meet-and-greet event at the KHNL studio was a big success. We had over a dozen students and almost as many professionals attend. Anchor Stephanie Lum took the students on a studio tour and gave them a peek behind the scenes during the 9 p.m. newscast.

Though just a handful of people showed up, it encouraged many members on the fence to attend the UNITY Convention! Thanks to the O-Lounge crew for serving up hot dogs Chicago style to get us excited for the convention!
